      The hepatitis C virus infects the liver. It can be passed through:

      • shared personal care items (e.g. razor)
      • pregnancy or childbirth
      • unsterilized medical or dental equipment
      • blood transfusions in countries without adequate screening
      • unsterilized tattoo or piercing equipment
      • condomless sex with a person with hepatitis C
      • shared drug-use equipment

      You could have hepatitis C and not have signs or symptoms.

      Many people can live with hepatitis C for years without symptoms. Getting tested is the only way to know if you have been exposed to hepatitis C.
