Doffing Gloves
Learn how to properly doff contaminated gloves to prevent self-contamination.
Transcript
In this video, we will first demonstrate a common way of improperly doffing gloves, resulting in self-contamination. Then, we will demonstrate how to properly doff gloves to prevent self-contamination.
We will use Glo Germ Gel, which fluoresces under ultraviolet light, as shown on these gloves. Note that there is no fluorescence around the wrists.
People often doff their gloves incorrectly by inserting fingers into the glove cuffs around the wrists.
However, this technique can result in self-contamination, as shown by the fluorescence around the wrists, which resulted from the transfer of Glo Germ Gel from the gloves to the wrists during improper glove removal.
To safely remove contaminated gloves, use the thumb and index finger of one gloved hand to pinch the cuff of the other glove and carefully peel the glove away towards the fingers, turning the glove inside out. Gather the removed glove in the fist of the gloved hand.
Next, insert one or two fingers from the ungloved hand into the glove cuff on the other hand, and carefully peel the glove away towards the fingers, using it to envelope the first removed glove.
This technique prevents self-contamination, as demonstrated by the absence of fluorescence on the hands and wrists.
The contaminated gloves should now be disposed of in a biohazardous waste bag. And don’t forget to wash your hands!
