  • Understand the attitudes and requirements of both regulated parties and public servants
  • Identify the role of the courts in your work

Foundations of Inspections and Regulations is an interactive session that demonstrates the application of the Public Health Agency Acts and Regulations to the inspections. It covers the applicable tasks before, during and after the inspections or assessments for the Human Pathogens and Toxins and Quarantine Act.

Prerequisite Training: Introduction to Regulatory Enforcement

Duration:  6 hours - conducted in 2 parts over 2 days

There are several parts to this course.

The materials presented here will allow you to:

  • Recognize Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and responsibilities.
  • Review strategies to prevent OHS hazardous occurrences in the field.
  • Define and apply situational awareness theory to potentially hazardous situations.
  • Examine available supports after experiencing or reporting a hazardous occurrence. 

This course is divided into sections and will take approximately 3 hours to compete.

This course is designed to help you use the SMEAC and SLAM tools to identify and mitigate hazards. This course is mandatory for PHAC Officers and Inspectors under the Compliance and Enforcement Policy.

After the Virtual session, you must complete a final test to receive your credit. We will provide you with further instructions about the test during the Virtual session.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety

Duration: 2.5 hours 



This course presents the expectations for professional presentation, and explains the purpose of the identification you use while conducting your duties.

It should take you about 20 minutes to complete.


Regulatory writing is different from other types of writing in that it needs to convey the law in a way that cannot be misinterpreted. As a regulatory professional, it is important for your writing to be accurate, unambiguous, and easy to understand. 

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Write clearly using plain language.
  • Write factual, unbiased and unambiguous observations and recommendations.
  • Write factual, unbiased and opinion-free Will Says.

This course should take about 30 minutes to complete.

This e-learning course will provide the important tool of note taking for inspectors and officers. Notes should be recorded at the time an event occurs or as soon as practical after the event (i.e. contemporaneously). The ability for you to take good notes is crucial for you to succeed in your role as it will reinforce your understanding of a particular situation and will trigger your brain to recall information.

This course will identify the steps necessary to conduct successful interviews, examine different types of interview questioning techniques and provide an opportunity to practice skills learned in a risk free environment.
